Each month, The Innevation Center chooses one of our fabulous Innevators to spotlight on our blog. In honor of this very green holiday (St. Patrick’s Day), we’ve chosen the US Green Building Council (USGBC)! Brilliant, we know. Marta Landers, Programs Coordinator of the USGBC Nevada Chapter, kindly sat down with me to explain more about the amazing things they do.
Celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, USGBC is an organization that provides educational opportunities and encourages legislation for green building, offering guidance and resources on how to build green. They host many events, including a monthly breakfast meeting and this year will host a 3-day event in April on non-profit management best practices and professional credential maintenance. In the last year the organization has seen tremendous growth, namely the addition of a dedicated staff to manage membership, promote the organization, operate events, and execute the managerial functions of the strategic plan.
Last year, The USGBC Nevada Chapter hosted their first Green Gala leadership awards ceremony, during which they held a silent auction with more than $10,000 in items donated to the organization. Items sold ranged from limited edition works from esteemed sea life painter Wyland to tickets to some of the best shows on The Strip.
This April, Marta explained, The USGBC Nevada Chapter is excited to launch a new regional event called Green by SouthWest, which will be the first ever regional event held by the USGBC Nevada Chapter. The goal is to educate and collaborate regionally as well as to gain support from other Pacific West USGBC Chapters to host GreenBuild, the organization’s signature annual international weeklong conference. With the momentum that the USGBC Nevada Chapter has built, they recently have been asked to submit a proposal to host the 2015 and 2016 USGBC Midyear Meeting and Leadership Summit, an honor only extended to the very best performing Chapters in the country. Marta provided that the Chapter is very excited to be extended this offer.
Like many college grads, Marta isn’t working in her degree field. “I studied accounting,” she explained, “but my favorite part of this job is planning the different events. Going out and getting speakers and sponsors, watching the event come together and seeing it in action is exciting,” she said. Any of you 20somethings out there having a post-grad career crisis: let Marta be an inspiration to you all. You never know where you may end up!
To close our interview, I asked Marta her favorite color. “Purple,” she said, “but I’ve definitely gained a new respect for green!”
